I need to echo Wallace's comments about Thoroughbred. Early on, it was really lonely dealing with Peabody in Kentucky.

Then Sierra Club,like always on the side of the angels, took it on in a big way. Your efforts along with those of the entire Cumberland Chapter made for victory in the end.

Good luck on your election to the Sierra Club board. We definitely need someone from coal country to represent our region on it.

Lane, you've done some great work for the Sierra Club. I will always admire how you guided the Cumberland Chapter through the agony of the struggle against Thoroughbred. Now I hope you can get elected, and help the national leadership work out of some of the current dysfunctional situations.

Keep on keeping on! It's a pleasure to work with you, and I have faith that we, the Sierra Club, will overcome some of the coal industry horrors we are currently confronting.

The biggest issue for me right now with the Club is the very simple, and very complex, one of communication. How do we keep engaging our traditional members and at the same time reach out to embrace new members and new technology, keeping the grassroots organization of the Club intact? It is a big issue that will need a lot of work at all levels of the Club. I am glad to have someone with your experience on this issue running for the Board.

The issues you list as having worked on are all important. Mountaintop removal mining does great harm to many people in parts of a number of states--usually the people least able to protect themselves. And, of course, the coal mined in this destructive way goes to fuel power plants that create serious air, water, and greenhouse gas polution.
Helping to make such a complex organization as the Sierra Club run effectively is also an extremely important goal.
Working to get the federal government to promote a new generation green electric grid that can move the energy of wind and solar from where they are plentiful to where they are needed, is also a top priority of mine--and we can create good new jobs in the process.
Keep us the good work. The Club needs people such as you on the board, people who have extensive and varied experience at the group and chapter level, and also in a variety of positions and campaigns at the national level.
